Eco Justice

Pope Francis has written a letter addressed to every person on this planet, urging us all to protect the Earth, our common home. In the letter, he says: "The Earth is God's gift to us, full of beauty and wonder, where the fruits of the Earth belong to everyone. But what we see today is that our common home has never been so hurt and mistreated as it has been in the last 200 years." Our Eco-Justice activities assist young people in taking their role as change agents and future leaders. Our response to Pope Francis' invitation is to raise awareness and opportunities for young people to make sustainable change. This programme area is based on Laudato Si' and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

All ages

Slow and Thrifty Makete

Slow and Thrifty is Logos' second-hand clothing market day for young people. This event aims to raise awareness about the negative social and environmental impacts of producing, consuming, and wasting clothes. It provides an opportunity for young people to prevent wearable clothes from being discarded into landfills or left unused. By recycling clothes within our community, we promote sustainable fashion, encourage mindful consumption, and support positive change—all while having fun together.

Year 7-10

Laudato Si (Half day activity or classroom session)

We explore Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si' and delve deep into the fundamental teachings. This session will invite young people to an eco conversion as they reflect on their unique relationship to the environment. Young people will leave this session with a greater understanding of stewardship. They will have a renewed call to love our neighbour and practical actions that encourage them to be change agents within their families and communities.

All ages

Assembly presentations

We have a range of short 10-15 minute presentations to raise awareness and promote environmental issues. These presentations are energising, relevant and empower young people to take action.

Year 12-13

Eco Advisory Group

Meets regularly throughout the Term at Whānau Maria (Logos Centre).

Building on our Pre-loved Market and classroom activities, this senior student advisory group amplifies youth voices and engages them to share their perspective and experiences about environmental issues. The group will meet face to face three times a year and support the Preloved Market. As a result, young people will benefit from leadership formation and growing connections with students from other schools.

"Urgently we can slow down on how much we consume and throw away. We can find great joy and freedom in living simply, rather than being always on the look-out for what we do not have."
